Lightweight Caravans under 1000Kg

There is no denying the fact that lightweight caravans are popular. They are easy to tow and you don’t need a big gas guzzler of a car to pull them. We ourselves have a lightweight caravan so we are already converts, but if you are considering buying one then you’ve come to the right place – I’ve done my research and compiled a list of lightweight caravans under 1000Kg for you to look out for.

But first of all, make sure to pay close attention to the two different weights that are shown for each caravan – they are:

  • The MRO (Mass in Running Order), which is the lowest weight shown, as this is the weight of the caravan without any personal belongings or accessories loaded in it.
  • The MTPLM (Maximum Technically Permitted Laden Mass), which is the highest weight shown, as this is the weight of the caravan plus all your stuff packed in it ready for your holiday.

So, how much can my car tow?

It’s recommended that the weight of a fully loaded caravan (the MTPLM) should be no more than 85% of the weight of your vehicle. Since I doubt that many people will be going on holiday towing an empty caravan, make sure to use the MTPLM weight shown when choosing a caravan for your particular car.

To find out what the recommended 85% towing weight limit is for your vehicle, use this towing limit calculator.
